Aug. 14, 2019: Fintan Promotional Shoot

In mid-August of 2019, my friend and musician, Fintan O’Brien hired me to shoot a set of flash, film-inspired promotional photos to be used across social media, his website, as well as streaming services.

Film Roll: August, 2019: Beach Picnic and Butchart Gardens

I didn’t really have time to do a big blog post this week so I decided to share my most recent film roll of Kodak Ektar 100 I got developed. The roll was shot at a beach picnic with some old friends, and then a visit to the Butchart Gardens.

Nov. 16, 2018: Matt Getting Dirk and Shera's Blessing (and ribs)

In mid-November of 2018, my girlfriend’s (Danielle) sister’s (Claire) boyfriend, Matt, decided he was ready to propose. Thus, Matt grabbed Danielle and one of Claire’s best friends, and then spent the day ring shopping for Claire. Upon finding the ring of choice, the group linked up at the family home to surprise Danielle and Claire’s parents, Dirk and Shera.

Nov. 12, 2018: Mt. Wells with Danielle

Before November 12, 2018, I had never been to Mt. Wells out in the Langford area. In fact, I don’t think I’d even heard of it before. Having hiked it with a friend recently, my girlfriend Danielle wanted to take me up to check it out. I’m always pretty stoked to explore a new place, so we headed out to the mountain. The hike itself wasn’t too strenuous and once at the top we were rewarded by a great view of the city from an angle unlike anything from the other mountains in Greater Victoria I’d been to. On the way down we couldn’t not snap some photos at the old water pipeline to finish the hike.

Oct. 31, 2018: Halloween in Royal Oak

On Halloween of 2018, my girlfriend and I went to her grandparent’s place in Royal Oak to attend a block party and have some dinner. Along with us were some of my girlfriend’s cousins who joined the festivities. One of the neighbours in the area had took it upon himself to purchase a very large sum of fireworks to put on a show for the street, which was quite kind of him and actually put on a decent show. Although weekday Halloween’s are usually pretty uneventful for me, this one was pretty great to just chill out and see the block come together to have a good time.

Oct. 10, 2018: Carmen on Gonzales

In early October, 2018, I met up with my friend Carmen to snap some portraits and chill around Gonzales Hill in Victoria. I met Carmen through a friend who was her roommate at the time, and every time I link up with Carmen it’s always a good time, as she is one of the funniest people I’ve met. Gonzales Hill boasts impressive views of the city and the Juan de Fuca Strait, while also being a fairly quiet place without too many people to get in the way of photos. With a great model, location, and light, these were some of my favourite photos of 2018.

June 9, 2019: Cowichan Cycles Presents: Island Cup Series Mt. Tzouhalem Enduro Race

My long-time good friend, Grant, is the proud owner of Cowichan Cycles - arguably the Cowichan Valley’s best mountain bike shop. Being good friends with the owner of a great bike shop, I’ve been given the honour of shooting many rad bike-related events. On June 9th, 2019, I was brought out to Mt. Tzouhalem in North Cowichan to cover an Enduro Race sponsored by Cowichan Cycles and a part of the Island Cup Series. My role was to cover the lifestyle of the event as well as get a few action shots of the riders. Overall, the race was a great success and I had a lot of fun hanging out with the mountain biking and Cowichan Cycles community, as well as sniping some bangers in the forest. Huge congrats to all the riders and major shout out to Grant, the Cowichan Cycles Team, all the volunteers, as well as the spectators.

Oct. 4, 2018: Lindsay in Beacon Hill Park

On Vancouver Island, October brings the changing of the seasons; the rains begin, but are still broken up by extraordinarily sunny days which hang on before November comes to engulf us in perpetual rain. Perhaps it is the fleeting feeling of Summer that makes October sunsets my favourite. On one such sunny day in early October, my great friend Lindsay and I went for a stroll around James Bay, and headed into Victoria’s famous Beacon Hill Park. We shot around, and enjoyed the last feelings of Summer, collecting memories to last us through the Winter.

Rob's Restaurant Reviews: Empire Donuts, Victoria, BC

With the job cancelled and hunger washing over me, I decided to find somewhere in the village to grab some lunch. After wandering a bit and seeing what my options were, I decided upon Empire Donuts whose sandwich board was on the street and advertised fried chicken. Thus, I walked down the alley and found the restaurant tucked away off the street.

Sept. 21-23, 2018: Seawheeze Weekend in Vancouver

Sept. 21-23, 2018: Seawheeze Weekend in Vancouver

Each year in Vancouver athletic apparel giant, Lululemon, hosts a half marathon that sells out extremely quickly. My girlfriend, Danielle, has ran the Seawheeze half marathon a number of times and after entering and winning a raffle to enter the 2018 edition, she did it again in September. After the run, Lululemon hosts a concert/party they call the Sunset Festival, which Danielle got me tickets to, and thus a nice little weekend trip to Vancouver was in the works.

Sept. 16, 2018: Rifflandia

In mid-September Rifflandia music festival comes to Victoria. In the past, I’ve been lucky enough to attended the festival for free thanks to my girlfriend’s uncle getting us VIP passes through his work. This year, my good friend Marcus, of Band of Rascals, hooked Danielle and I up with some backstage artist passes. With no way to turn this down, Marcus and I headed out to Royal Athletic Park and enjoyed the day chilling and drinking some beers, listening to the music. Later in the day, Marcus’ buddy and music collaborator Fintan met us and we continued our activities. Eventually Danielle met us as well.

Aug. 31 - Sept. 02, 2018: Hornby Island Camping

Hornby Island has always had a special place in my heart as one of my favourite places to camp on Vancouver Island during the Summer. Further, it was on Hornby Island many years ago when I first became interested in photography, borrowing a friend’s DSLR and snapping a few photos with it. For the last few years, my friends and I try to get out to the island to bask in its sunny glory.

Aug. 26, 2018: Ice Cream and Murals in Rock Bay

Rock Bay is a neighbourhood in Victoria bordering downtown. Comprised mostly of industry and commercial spaces without much residential space, the area is somewhat rough. Because of this, it’s not somewhere I’ve explored much, nor do I feel many people have. In August of 2018, an arts festival was happening in Victoria, and most notably for me, a number of murals were being painted around Rock Bay by artists from Victoria and beyond. Also of note, some of the best ice cream to be found in Victoria is made in Rock Bay at Parachute Ice Cream. With exploration, art, and ice cream in mind, Danielle and I along with our great friends Katie and Marcus set out on foot to tour Rock Bay.

Aug. 25, 2018: Butchart Gardens

Known as one of Greater Victoria’s most popular tourist destinations, the once limestone mine turned gardens, Butchart Gardens has been a tradition to visit on my father’s side of the family for as long as I can remember. Usually twice a year — once in the Summer and once in the Winter — my brother and I visit with our father.

Aug. 5, 2018: Lomas Lake Day 02

With Danielle, Sam, and I having hiked up to Lomas Lake the day before, come Sunday, we were ready to ‘bag some peaks’ as they say. The last time Danielle and I visited Lomas Lake in 2016, we were able to reach the top of Mt. Landale, but didn’t get a chance to summit El Capitan. This time around, Danielle and I wished to hit the top of El Cap., so we began the climb up to the saddle between the two.

Aug. 4, 2018: Lomas Lake Day 01

Having previously visited Lomas Lake in 2016, Danielle and I had been meaning to visit again in 2017. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make it up in 2017, so made it a sure goal to make it up in 2018. Thus, in early August, Danielle and I found a weekend we were both free, in order to head up the mountain. We put out the invite to a few of our friends to join us, and our good friend, Sam, was able to join us.

July 23, 2018: Grant's Birthday

On July 23rd, Grant’s girlfriend, Virginia, invited a group of us down to the beach in Mill Bay to celebrate his birthday with a little picnic. Recently having broke his hip in a mountain biking accident, Grant was crutch-bound. Yet, his mobility issues didn’t stop him from putting on a good face, and traversing the rocky terrain. The group of us enjoyed the sunset together as well as the food, and especially Virginia’s killer homemade cake.

July, 19: Sidney Night Market

The Sidney Night Market is probably the biggest in the Greater Victoria area, and didn’t disappoint with its many vendors featuring local crafts, plants, produce, and food. Joining us on our visit was Annika and Niko’s new puppy Otis, which we were all very excited to interact with, being so cute and new to the group. After exploring the market for a bit, and each grabbing a few things here and there, we grabbed some food and enjoyed it and each other’s company while the sun set.
